Abstract

Summary

An examination of the grammar of a passage from Cato’s oration De dote discussed by Gellius (Gell. 10,23,4) leads to the conclusion that following a divorce a judge reviewed the morality of the woman concerned, and he could deprive her of part or the whole of her dowry if he found her guilty of immorality. On the other hand while the marriage lasted it was the husband who performed the censor’s duties with respect to his wife.
