Abstract

The article titled Extraordinary baptism steward raises issues regarding performing the sacrament of baptism by people who do not have an ordination. In the first part, the author briefly presented who is an ordinary steward, to be able in the second part to concern herself with situations in which the steward can not perform the ministrations of sanctification. In the second, fundamental and definitely broader part of the article, issues of providing a baptism by people listed in can. 861 § 2 of Code of Canon Law were presented. At the point concerning substitute people in the raised canon, two situations in which sacrament can be performed by an unordained person were discussed: firstly – a situation without the occurence of necessity, secondly – a situation, in which necessity occurs. In the first group, catechists and other people were listed. The author has made speculations when it comes to the translation of the word catechista, which is contained in the canon being discussed. She has also brought up situations, in which a catechist can perform a baptism. Thereafter she presented what the phrase other people means and what their eligibility is with regards to performing the objective sacrament. At the end of the article, circumstances in which a baptism can be performed by anyone with the right intentions were mentioned and considered.
