Abstract

Clinical pastoral care plays a significant role in meeting the spiritual and emotional needs of patients, regardless of their religious affliation. CPC programs emphasize interfaith understanding, enabling chaplains to navigate the cultural diversity of patients. The aim of this article is to illustrate the lay chaplain and his role in spiritual care of patients at Overlook Medical Center in Summit, New Jersey. Interviews were conducted with patients, nurses and a lay chaplain showed that hospitalized people who received appropriate pastoral care are more likely to comply with treatment plans. The spiritual support provided by lay chaplains is especially important for patients, their families, and medical staff, resulting in better health outcomes and well-being.
