Professor Józef Frank – social activist and popularizer of science

Abstract

Prof. Józef Frank, a doctor educated in Western European universities, came to Vilnius at the beginning of the 19th century and began working at the medical faculty of Vilnius University. He be came known to the city community not only as a scientist, but also as a unique promoter of medical knowledge and hygiene. Demanding for his students, he actively participated in the scientific life and initiated such ventures as the creation of an ambulance service, the Institute of Vaccination, the Institute of Motherhood and the Vilnius Scientific Society. He introduced the practice of doctors' home visits to the sick, poor patients. Together with Bishop Jan Nepomucen Kossakowski, he founded the Vilnius Charity Society and held a gratuitous position of the head of the Third Medical Faculty, on top of his main occupation at the University. He was valued by the authorities and widely respected by Vilnius residents, for eighteen years he ran one of the best clinics in Europe there. He left Vilnius in 1823 for Italy where he died in December 1842. In his honor, the Vilnius community offered Frank a medal, which he donated to the Medical Society that he founded, as the insignia of the president's authority of this institution.
