Abstract

This article is part of the research on the „Law and Literature” movement, which has only relatively recently been paving its way in European and especially Polish academia. The paper, which is interdisciplinary by design, deals with themes that allow both lawyers to see the value of literature, including popular literature, in shaping the legal consciousness of society, and literary scholars not only to appreciate popular crime literature as a valuable object of research, but also to note the close ties that this genre can build with the doctrine of law. This article analyses two extremely popular books in the ‘crime fiction’ genre in Poland, Kasacja by Remigiusz Mróz and Motylek by Katarzyna Puzyńska. They serve as a starting point for a broader consideration of the formation of political sentiment and legal awareness in Poland. The axis of comparison is the juxtaposition of the settings in which the novels are set, in this case the big city and the countryside. First, the link between the settings contained in these fictional novels and reality is established, which forms the basis for further juxtaposition of descriptions from the novels with the mechanisms of the real world. The conclusions of the presented research indicate that the literary descriptions, as well as the specific characteristics of crime literature, allow for the presentation of a valuable social commentary.
