Abstract

Transplantation is widely recognized as one of the most effective methods of treating end-stage organ failure. Nowadays, thanks to the development of modern techniques, we are able to transplant practically any organ, tissue or cell. The main problem currently faced by medicine, however, is the chronic shortage of transplant material. The number of available organs, tissues and cells that can be transplanted is limited. As the need for transplants continues to outstrip supply, especially in highly developed countries, the need to find an alternative to human transplant material is becoming more and more pressing. Xenotransplantation may be a remedy for the constantly rising shortage of transplant material. However, the intensification of research on interspecies transplantation, as well as the prospect of its widespread use, forces us to consider all the advantages and disadvantages of this type of therapy and to resolve the dilemmas that arise in practice.
