Moral upbringing or moral and ethical instruction? A discussion about the tasks of public education system

Abstract

In this paper the authors contsider about the tasks of public education system as regards moral instruction. They attempt to solve the dilemma between moral upbringing at home and moral and ethical instructioin at school. The key role in these considerations is placing moral education in the public sphere and J.F. Herbart’s concept of upbringing education (German: erziehender Unterricht). Within this framework the authors analyse the theoretical indications to teach Ethics in lower high schools.
